Whole Body Vibration
Adelaide Physiotherapy is pleased to announce that we now have a Whole Body Vibration Machine!
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) is a term used to describe the transfer of vibration to the body. It was originally developed by NASA to help returning astronauts recover bone and muscle mass after space missions. WBV is now being used for its therapeutic and physiological effects amongst the general population.
At Adelaide Physiotherapy we use the DKN Technology WBV machine. It works by creating vibration in the base that transfers through the body. The nervous system then responds to these vibrations by activating muscle fibers through the stretch reflex. Through this method of recruitment, WBV can achieve 100% activation of the muscle fibers, while standard exercise methods only achieve 40-60% activation.
Some physiological effects of WBV include:
- Increased bone density
- Increased muscle recovery
- Improved lymphatic drainage
- Increased metabolism
- Increased circulation
- Increased serotonin and reduced cortisol levels
Some therapeutic effects of WBV include:
- Stress reduction
- Pain relief
- Weight loss
- Increased flexibility, coordination and mobility
- Low impact exercise
- Improvements to energy levels and mood
Conditions WBV is useful for (including but not limited to):
- Back/neck pain
- Joint pain
- Sports performance
- Falls prevention
- Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia
At Adelaide Physiotherapy we require an assessment with your physiotherapist prior to starting WBV. This is to determine your suitability and to design an individualised program. If you are interested in learning more about WBV please contact our clinic on (08) 84313559.
